yea I've actually gotten to drive one a short distance on the freeway before and I know what you mean. I didn't think it sounded like shit when it opened up, more at an idle. its the 10 cyls, not quite as rumbly as a nice american v8 and not fine tuned like a euro 12... you learn to respect it and its flat torque curve tho.. ;)

ROFL!
since when is the Viper a race car?
i mean the gears are set up so goofy that the car cannot hit its top speed in 6th gear but only in fifth! also, the suspension ain't the ultimate badass road hugger and the car's too heavy to really get some serious g's on. It is owned on the track by lighter, nimbler and/or more refined cars such as Porsche 996 GT3, Nissan Skyline GT-R, TVR Cerbera 4.2/4.5, Ferrari 360 Modena. when it comes to handling-heavy tracks, the Viper is embarassed even by cars such as the Peugeot 206 S16/WRC, Audi S3, Citroen Saxo VTS, BMW M3 Compact and even the archaic Lancia Delta HF Integrale.
agreed, the Viper has incredible straight-line performance and more Torque than you want, but its far from a race car unless you let ppl like Oreca or other Tuners/Racing Teams work the chassis, weight and suspension to something that actually stands a chance against cars with 2/3 its horsepower. Of course once that's done things get messy (but Lister and Chevrolet also have a rather serious saying in that).Last edited by Dimension; 11-07-2001, 19:54.

Its not like on-track performance really matters much ;)
basically if you go into cars like that, performance doesn't matter that much(you don't feel the difference in everyday-driving anyways), what matters is image, looks, sexyness and the fact you got the car you always wanted.
I actually chose my car because of the looks, the weight, and the fact it DOESN'T have too much low-range Torque so i actually stand a chance of not having to change the rear tires after 30 minutes of stop-and-go. and of course the sound of the thing is sweet as hell. but that's just me

The Venom (Viper) is the quickest production car in history with a 0-60 time of 2.4 seconds. It can get to 100 a half of a second after the M3 can get to 60. It does the quarter mile in 9.9 sec @ 138.95 mph.
The Viper wins.

frst you dork i was talking about a regular Viper GTS or RT/10. i know the viper GTS-R has been dominating the FIA GT2 series 98 through 00 but i wasn't talking about the GTS-R, in fact not even talking about the ACR let alone some tuned Viper such as the venom. My point was the straight out of the Box Viper is not a race car.
in addition i wasn't necessarily referring to g's when saying it is beaten by the cars i mentioned, i was referring to actual track times. i did this mainly because i didn't have any serious figures of the g-forces the Viper can haul.
Also, race cars USE their 6th gear to get some extra high speed punch . the Viper doesn't. which makes it a non-race car. the McClaren F1 hits its top speed in 5th also? gee, guess its not setup to race, but for economy. heh
BTW, found this while searching for some production car track records. watch the 3rd place car, the blue Porsche

"Obwohl die Viper GTR-S mit einem Rundenrekord von 8:58.014 Minuten das mit Abstand schnellste Fahrzeug im Feld der 210 Starter war, verhinderten Probleme mit Fahrwerk und Bremsen den Sieg des Chrysler-Teams. "
translated, the Viper GTS-R was by far the fastest car in the field of 210 with a fastest lap of 8:58.014 minutes but problems with the suspension and brakes kept the chrysler team from winning(that is irrelevant though, pay attention to the lap time)
source is here:

"Walter Röhrl hat diese magische Zeitgrenze jetzt erstmals unterschritten. Mit 7,56 Minuten stellte der zweifache Rallye-Weltmeister im neuen Porsche 911 GT3 einen neuen Rundenrekord auf. "
translated, two time Rallye World Champion Walter Röhrl beat the magic barrier(of under 8 minutes) for the first time. He timed in at 7:56 minutes in the new Porsche 911 GT3, which means a new lap record(which has btw been beaten numerous times since then, mostly by hard-tuned Porsche's, a Skyline and a Supra. Current record holder is the TechArt GT-Street(Porsche 911 Turbo based) at 7:43min). (source: http://www.porsche-augsburg.de/PorscheGT3.html )
all lap times mentioned above are referring to the 27 something km Nürburgring-Nordschleife Track.
i also found a really great list of track records of street-legal cars at http://www.track-challenge.com/main....=tracktest.asp
to sort the tabula by lap times acheived on the Hockenheimring, click on "H'heim" on the extreme right in the red bar.
Leaving out the cars made by tuners, the Viper comes in 7th, after the Lotus Esprit V8, BMW M3 Convertible, Chevrolet Corvette Convertible, Maserati 3200 GT, Audi RS4 and BMW M5.
Overall, the Viper is at 39, the Geiger Viper with 534HP comes in 25th. Note that the regular European Viper has only 384HP though, so the lap time of the american 450 HP Viper should be a bit higher (ain't beatin' the Lotus under any circumstances tho')
makes you wanna go mmh.Last edited by Dimension; 11-11-2001, 17:58.
