Beating hiveminds swarm when he was #1 and in his prime.
At that time i sneaked into top 10 with weird settings ladder games (back then it was possible to get a few of them going, like no harvesting, no inject games and stuff) and one day on WON hivemind was complaining that i wasn't a good player cause i liked that sort of setup-games. (he was also dissing gravwell strats) So i challenged him to a ladder game on subj

    Deciding moment in cataclysm:
winning the first game i ever played against shin (had a 1 month lead on my cause of the silly release dates around the world) And also winning my first and only game i played against [7th]
And all our yesterdays have lighted fools
The way to dusty death. Out, out, brief grav
Grav is but a walking shadow, a poor player
That struts and frets his hour upon the stage
And then is heard no more: it is a tale
Told by an swarmer, full of sound and fury,
    Signifying nothing.

sorry if this is out of place... and i certainly don't want to interrupt the "flow" here...

BUT, i just *have* to mention how immensely enjoyable it was reading this thread. you guys are great writers and had me on the edge of my seat at times. ;)

i'm just a lowly SPer, so i don't think i have any defining moments... i'll have to change that.

cool, i need another non-bitchy hw chick to discuss and play hw with ...yes jayhawk, you should definitely change the fact that you have no "greatest moments" yet. multiplayer is awesome, it's what got me hooked in the first place. no offense to SP players only but it eventually seemed lame compared to playing actual people, with multi you get a much bigger rush and it's tons more fun. plus you can get damn good training being a chick . come on WON and IRC so we can begin 2v2ing ...i am usually on IRC as punkgirl or just punk.

ps sorry for interrupting the thread but i could not help responding to this one...i'll post my greatest moment (in the short amount of time that i've played) soon.

junior sexomo???? maybe "past his prime sexomo" or "wishes he could still get sexomo" LOL

I thought about this thread a bit more and I'm still sticking to my "defy definition" bit, but now I've thought up some stories to go with it. I'll call them Outside Looking In.

Why Outside Looking In? Well, I've not made it to the elite ranks in my own eyes. I've never made it to #1 (or even the top 20 for that matter) or beaten a #1. But, I've come close to crossing that threshold of self-confidence that might change my opinion a few times.

                    A Natural Born Killer
A little over a year ago, I was involved with NBK. The NBK tag was meant to recapture some of the BM mystique, so identities were to be kept secret and the tag itself wasn't to be worn in ladder games until you'd made it to the top 10. So, in preparation, I began playing some games using my NBK name without the tag (Primal).

I wasn't finding much action, one night, and I spotted a game on Subjugate "1v1 skilled". Thinking, "what the hell I need the practice anyway", I joined. There, I was met by a player called Gladiator.

I went with Joe's strong swarm (scouts, LCV's, HCV's, MCV's) and probed a few times to make sure all was well. Seeing the usual strike craft build for a swarm, I felt comforted that I was on a good path. I was remembering everything - especially to keep the reinforcements coming (my Achilles' heel). When the battle finally began (Gladiator had the patience of a veteran), I was doing pretty well at keeping things on my side of the rocks. Then Gladiator says he'd messed up with his controllers. I kept pressing and eventually took him out - using a kami at the right time. When the game was over, Gladiator asked me, "Ok, which vet are you?". I couldn't tell him out right then, but eventually Gladiator (aka Bloodscream) and I got to know each other and our smurf names pretty well.

                    Surprise, you've been smurfed
At last year's OMO birthday party, I got involved in a 3v3 on Scattered. On my side there was MsTopper, Goldwolf{TWP} )playing under his old OMO name Graybeard) and myself against ReaperNBK, ToxicNBK and some guy named SuperFreak. The starting positions were laid out like this: Goldwolf was beside Toxic, MsTopper was beside Reaper and SuperFreak and I were in the middle of our respective teams.

Looking at the layout and knowing how Reaper liked to play , I suggested to Goldwolf that we rush Reaper - thinking he's probably going to do the same to MsTopper. I was right, but Goldwolf and I weren't able to get over in time to save her. Now, Reaper is hurting - much of his swarm was destroyed by MsTopper's MS explosion and he's got 2 fresh swarms on him. That's when Toxic got going. He counterattacked Goldwolf and forced us to break off on Reaper. With Reaper weakened and Toxic counterattacking, Goldwolf and I turn our attention on Toxic and start whittling away at his fleet - which is naturally stronger than Reaper's was because he hadn't lost anything yet. It was a tough fight, but slowly Goldwolf and I were making progress and our MS's were getting into position to provide quick support.

Then, this enormous fleet of blue and orange frigates, destroyers and cruisers shows up and starts dishing out some serious whup-ass. I was SuperFreak and we'd totally ignored him. SuperFreak continues to bitch slap both of our now perfectly positioned MS's and kills us both.

Afterword, I asked Reaper who SuperFreak was - it was Grimm. What a guy to ignore. LOL

                    The one that got away
Hivemind had recently joined OMO (OldBuggr) and had shown me his new strat. (I'd love to hear from him again, anybody seen or heard from him?) I'd been working on the build/research for a bit and had it down pretty well and so, when Reaper shows up (he's involved in all my stories actually since he's the one that taught me the strong swarm) and we can't get a good 2v2 going, I ask him if he would like to do a 1v1 on Subjugate. "Sure"

I start my research path to get out HCV's and a FF as quick as possible and go 4-1 on collectors/controllers. There's a quick skirmish in the middle involving scouts, LCV's and Reaper was reinforcing with some bombers. In a minute or two I had my attack fleet ready - 6 repair corvs, 9 HCV's, and a FF and it starts cutting Reaper's swarm apart (just like Hive's did to mine when he showed the strat to me). I reinforce with a few more HCV's and start working on a MS killing fleet. Reaper's doing a good job of forcing me to switch targets and micromanage my support/repair operations, but my IF's are starting to close in. Now, I'm forcing Reaper to switch targets and after a minute or two, his MS is on fire. That's when I notice how badly he's been hitting the FF. BOOM! It's gone. My repair corvettes have long since been killed and since I'd stopped reinforcing the HCV's they're down to just a few ships, which Reaper's HCV's are feasting on. Now, my IF's and SF's are sitting ducks and one by one, Reaper's HCV's pick them off. RU-wise, I'm stalled - having spent all my money on the MS killing fleet. Fleet-wise, I'm helpless. Reaper picks off my remaining collectors and start pecking away at my MS.

Afterword, he tells me I had him beaten - his MS was on fire and almost dead. Hmm, but for not supporting that FF, I managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Good game old friend.

Once upon a time, when the Old Ones roamed the HW universe and the original Ladder was cooking, I tried my luck. Weeks of punishment by swarmers on subjugate led me to delete it and all other small maps and seek my fortune elsewhere. I came across a map called The Frontier. It was love at first sight friends and neighbors.

After several test runs against the AI to get my timing down, I took my show on the road. I found this guy named Beltemal who was waayy up there on the Ladder and was actually willing to play me on a map other than Subjugate. I gave him a tour of the map in chat and we were off. The wall-o-Autoguns made his chosen research tree about as useful as teats on a bull. My newly tweaked Assault/Grav attack was just what the doctor ordered and ownage ensued. I used the now-ancient and well-countered research tree of assault/grav/ion/cloak/destroyer to put 6 assults w/grav, 6 ions w/cloak and grav, 4 supports w/grav; and a destroyer poppin out of hyperspavce just as the frigates get to the MS. It was a well-played game all around and started a climb from 124 to 20 on the Ladder in 2 weeks. I learned months later that Beltemal was some sort of map-making god and HW elite as well as being an old OMO. The delayed ego boost was something to see indeed. I beat him at that map at least 3 times in my climb, and it was a great fight every time.

That first game against him was probably the first time I made zero mistakes and everything went the way I had it planned, while at the same time playing an excellent opponent. To this day I don't know how to swarm and use the basics I taught myself on that map to survive swarmers.

There, is that defining enough for ya?

In CAT I had a few great moments as SteelWolf(TWP) and they all involved large mixed fleets of 3 or more TWP descending like an angry pagan god on an opponent, then fighting amongst ourselves for the kill after we got his CS burning and his ships killed(ppl would just freak out). There was also that one time we got off the perfect Time-on-Target salvo of not one, not two but THREE Siege Cannons against this poor slob. The screenies still make me chuckle. BTW.. to any ppl who got mercilessly mobbed by hordes of TWP while I was there... sorry, it was my aggressive phase and I have the correct medication now.

                            defining moments. heh.

The first time I played HW online (March 2000 perhaps?), I won (no injection game, must have been playing another newbie). I liked play online, but realized I liked SP and modding more, so I really didn't play much. I started playing a bit after joining the RBA (ok, fine, laugh at me, but Molle and Xypher were running the thing ).

When Molle and Xypher left the RBA, I somehow ended up taking over (not terribly good if the only online games you really play are mod testing). I went online with Mazer, who was trying to teach me a couple things and got humiliated... not a big surprise though, as he is/was pretty great. I got a bit discouraged, and stayed more towards the website end of the RBA. So far, my HW online experiences hadn't been that great or addicting.

I went online a couple more times, got the crap beaten out of me, and then had a couple runins with 7th (we weren't exactly friends at the time). Realized just how much I sucked. (quite a bit).

HW:C interuption: In perhaps one of the saddest HW:C games of all time, (my third online, even after working with UberJumper to get the Sierra ladder up, I was too busy modding the game), Athexx beat me, and didn't build any ships (glad that didn't get recorded ). I don't think he harvested either. Researched one or two technologies (he played Beast). I then realized that HW:C wasn't for me either.

A while after that, UberJumper beat me and claims (stats file says so, recording does not, that I killed NONE of his ships. I saw explosions ingame though. Might have had a sync problem).

A while later, in a moment of amazing stupidity, Ceejayoz and I agreed to a 2v2 with reki and Soul. We got humiliated, and Ceejayoz (since I was humiliated first) posted the recording on HWU (1403 downloads personally, perhaps thats why I get laughed at on WON...). That was a defining moment in that it confirmed that I should keep away from HW WON.

I played danga a while after that in HW:C, and was quickly (15 minutes or so) showed that I should avoid HW:C too. Its not currently installed (I was beaten very badly, thx for not recording danga).

At 2 AM, I agreed to Soul's Guidestone vs. HWU challenge, creating a highly anticipated massive failure when the GS guys didn't show, saving myself from having my ass kicked. However, some of the prelim games got posted. I got a couple scout kills I think.

This all comes down to one thing: my HW/C defining moments have all showed me not to EVER go on WON

I still plan to play AlexG though. I hear I might have a shot...

                              Fe0r my mimic swarm.

In the early days of Cat, I had a lot of fun decimating people with Mimic swarms. This is an example of one of the medium sized fleets I created (over the course of a game). That FFA game ended, if I remember correctly, with Stone_monkey quitting because he was annoyed with my use of Mimics :-/ Highest amount of mimics used in a game was over 3000 If I remember correctly.

As for Homeworld... well... I've not played much online... 100 or so games maybe tops. I do remember running into Dukath once in one of my first games online... back in '99. oh my... didn't know gravwells were so handy. I do remember one game that I successfully trapped and pounded a fleet of Destroyers coming out of hyperspace in one of my wells. That was very satisfying :-)

Homeworld was really my first experience in playing games online and to this day it's still my favorite game and community to be part of. I've been around since the start and my collection of memories are vast. The best experience I have above all else is meeting and getting to know APOLLO. He is the first person that I started talking to on a regular basis and eventually we got to know each other very well. The GODS clan was my introduction to APOLLO and playing team games in general, basically because he was the only other clan member that I saw at the time. We started playing team games on a regular basis and were never afraid to take on the big dogs of the time such as BDU, DD and AoK. Early on I think we both saw the potential we had as team mates. Not to say we didn't take our lumps in the early days but we always gave these guys good games even if we lost. Over time we started to get very comfortable with each others playing styles and learned to compliment each others strengths and weaknesses. When this happened there were (and still are) very few teams that can beat us. Through this time APOLLO was (and still is) my biggest teacher. He has shown me countless tactics and in general has broaden my perspective of this game! (thx bro).

One of the best old memories I have is a 3 vs 3 with APOLLO, Division and myself against 3 BM guys, I forget the names. It was one of those classic games when the tide of the battle changes hands 3 or 4 times. At one point Division whispers "I'm done". Immediately APOLLO and I rush over to defend him. He was right, when we got to his MS it didn't look good, the BM guys had joined fleets to off Divisions burning MS. One by one we thinned thier ranks and were able to finally push them back and claim victory. To this day I think that game best reflects the spirit of SLS, when you fight one of us, you fight all of us, no matter what!

The creation of the "Nuke Bros" Fission and Fusion are amoung the defining moments. APOLLO and I got a lot of laughs from peeps tring to figure out who the hell we were!

Of course the creation of SLS is one of the all time best moments for me too!

There are so many other moments I could probably think if I sat here long enough but I think I can sum it up like this: I luff all the peeps in this very eclectic community, even the dolts! If I've played with you or against you, you have all made my experience in Homeworld a great one! Thx for all the great games and memories!

                                Peace
Live life never asking "what if,..."
