RTCW is cropping up a helluvalot lately in our circles and I'm keen to get the game. This week end I'll hit the swap meet and see if it's available (I avoid paying full retail for anything).
reki reaper and rule, why dont you guys start a rtcw tips thread for us noobies...
Say if you were going to start the game fresh, how would you fast track ur skills? What could we do to leap frog noobship and commence ownership???
Reki from those tests I switched to the mp40 cos its better than the Thompson for accuracy (and its got that wierd edge in hit points for shots from behind). But ya need 100 points for a kill = 8 bullets from an mp40 but only 6 from a Thompson. Are you using Thompson all the time now?
Metho: Rule and reki are both better than me but I got a few suggestions so far:
Learn to do headshots. The playtesting shows that ya get about 50 hit points for a head and only 14 to 18 for anywhere else. With the rifle its 100% kill rate for a headshot and 50 HP's for the body. I'm practising moving and firing at the head = strafing that all the fps junkies do in their sleep. The Single Player is a good place to practice that. In Multiplayer the better players seem to jump right into the thick of it but keep moving and are just more accurate so they take the others out.
Use key binding/hot keys. There a quite a few utilities/scripts published now. I like this one for using weapons and this one for commands. The second one creates a new file called z_rtcw.cfg in your C:\Program files\Return to Castle Wolfenstein\Main folder. You can open this file in a text editor (textpad is 1337) and change the key bindings at yer whim. You can then issue orders, respawn and change troop type, order airstrikes blah blah blah with single keystrokes.
Learn the maps. Here is a review of all the multiplayer maps and their strategies. I would recommend going into MP and being a spectator as soon as you get the game and watching some games online. If you do just the plain spectator camera view then you can fly all over the maps and learn them - I spent a day doing this 'cos when I started I was just shooting people without understanding the overall plan. You can then cycle through all the players with the ctrl key - then you can follow them as they play. that will give you a feel for how the good players do it. Like watching HW recordings in real time.
Browse the forums; here and here are two of the busiest.
Play it as a team game not solo.
I'm sure reki and rule have lots of ideas/suggestions but these should get you jump-started.
i got alot of little tactics that i luv to do cuase it shows how dumb one can be heh. Liek for example..
i was chilln on the right side of a door way, an enemy passed by fast, i shot him in the back. As he sat there waiting thos few second to see if a medic would get there i went back to the same spot and chilled, then when his body disappeared id move to the other side and shill. LOL then he came running and gunning at the wring side and i killed him, it was funny cause after that he didnt go that way.
Metho: the thread "You know the game is full of n00bs when......." tells a bunch of funnies about n00bie mistakes. I bet if everybody was honest they made one or more of these errors (or is it just me?).
ok, im a jump in and do it player - always trying to lead the team and swearing at the campers. like reaper said, main thing in this game is to get involved.. KEEP MOVING.
the guys who (IMO) are the most annoying, are the ones on your team who are afraid of getting shot, so they hide in all the corners and throw grenades and shit.
I die all the time, but take out five or six guys doing it each time. If you have the guts to charge the opposition, you get good at keeping a cool head amongst all the mayhem. lemme just say - there aint nothing like charging the opposition on destruction, hitting the flagpole, twisting and throwing a grenade mid air down the opposition alleyway (taking out two guys), slamming yourself up against the wall and headshotting another two guys coming out of the alleyway before calling an airstrike onto the roof for the snipers and then charging through the shield door and SURVIVING. its an amazing fuckin buzz... its even better when someone in limbo has been watching your efforts and they go "whoah.."
you get good at this game with familiarity, the best place to start is as a medic - following your guys around and healing them, getting to know the maps. once you know what you are doing, engineer is the guy who runs the objectives (but you do have to know what you are doing). lieutenant is also cool, but you gotta learn how not to kill your own guys with air strikes.
anyway, in a nutshell, newbies should be medics till they get half decent. like reaper said, learn the headshot and learn to stay cool in a crisis. lotsa guys start shooting at the floor and walls as soon as you charge them caus they get excited. be precise and never stop moving.
hi, much as i would love to join the fun, i really sdon't think it's worth me shelling out 40 quid for a game if it's a LPB fest. Do istand a chance in MP with my shoddy dial-up or not ?
the site is kool i guess tho i knew most of that (kinda) but anyway i must of missed the link where he talked about gernades. Anyway if u dont know i made this thing today.
thats roughly how it works and i learned the hard way, i think i killed m self like 10 times tring this
RUle
lieutenant is also cool, but you gotta learn how not to kill your own guys with air strikes.
lieutenant is the best class in my opinion.
I still can't figure out why most ppl choose to be a soldier and pick a Thompson... I mean, a soldier does not have any special capabilities... If your really want a Thompson, it's best to go lieutenant since you have unlimited ammo + you can call in air-strikes.
Oh yeah, another thing... some of you said "always keep moving". I don't agree with that. I noticed that I could could use alot of my Counter-Strike experience with firing... you'll be so much more accurate when crouching. On large maps I can easily take out snipers with my Thompson. But if you're on a small map like Village, you best run circles around them holding shift.
Another important thing to use is peeking around corners... this is really usefull. You can make some kick-ass suprise attacks with it.
