i was thinking of replying to this thread in a sarcastic way using 'flat earth theory' as my base to disprove all the above. But really, i cant be bothered, its just all too silly.

Another perspective to the same question

      Flandry

The whole philosophy behind this article does ask the question; are we really alone in our universe? If for one minute you have a shred of doubt in your mind then you have crossed over with the rest of us.

I don't put my faith in God alone (1) or take leaps of faith in my prayers. I rely on empirical knowledge that only comes through what one learns in his travels through life. Why can't we accept the possibility that there may be life out there?

We certainly have proof that single celled organisms aren't really that complex and God like to create. We know the recipe for building a primordial stew to send to Mars someday in hopes of it beginning an oxygen viable biosphere.

We know through our empirical understanding that given a favorable environment, life will evolve regardless. If certain conditions are met biologically speaking, then there may be millions of life forms out there already in different stages of evolution. The Drake Equation shows us just how diversely common our planet is in the scheme of things.

Leave it to the skeptics and charlatans to ridicule theoretical physics as a joke, don?t jump on their bandwagon too soon Magpie. We have a duty as intelligent people to have an open mind and to always question our disbeliefs with a reason.

What tics me off are these dishonest farmers in the UK who staged these aerial patterns in an effort to gain notoriety and make a complete mockery of the SETI program.

Just keep one thing in mind. We have been sending radio signals since the 1940?s in light years that only equates to a return trip of 60 light years. In cosmological terms, we have hardly left out neighborhood nevertheless explore the 30 thousand light years of galaxy!

Even if there was intelligent life and they happened to have their radio telescopes trained on that 1% needed to pick up our transmission how long would it take them to decipher the data and comprehend it enough to send a reply back and for us to have out telescopes in the right place at the right time to intercept their reply?

Try and think of radio waves as light moving through the cosmos. Five years ago we predicted our universe was only 12 billion years old now because of the distant visible galaxies coming into view that figure has been increased to 18 billion!

Magpie I know you?re an avid reader like myself. If you want to read a great book read ?CONTACT? by Carl Sagen, they even made a movie about the above information that will question creation vs. evolution for those who want the abridged version in a two hour movie.

Red, i agree with all u said, but look, the kid posts a few pics of a landscape and gets excited about some random patterns. U can generate the same result from any pic of a landscape, BECAUSE ppl are so good at picking out patterns that they find them where they dont really exist.
When i mentioned the flat earth thing, its because many so called 'intelligent', so called 'educated' ppl dont know how to disprove the flat earth without calling in 3rd party evidence. By winding him up with it, it may have made him get used to thinking for himself, instead of following these loonies that spring up with wild claims (usually to make a quick buck for them selves).
And as for others picking up our radio waves, would they
          a not give a damm?
b roll laffing on the floor at our simple tech?
          c send a hello?
d settle down to watch 'Mork and Mindy'?
          (a,b,d r j/k)

its not the philosphy in the post i find issue with, its the simplicity.

nb, i already read Sagan, years ago (RIP)

In essence i think the same.
I am 99.8% certain there are other intelligent lifeforms out there.
however, all this "grey alien" and "cropcircle" goof is something i completely ignore or make fun of. those things hold no credibility whatsoever with me, neither do wild conspiracy theories. besides, a cropcrcle surely is a doltish way to make first contact, isn't it? i doubt aliens would come to us and appeal to the populus using a goofed up phenomenon like that.

Just to show you how hard it is to detect a signal from interstellar space.

Imagine a sheet of paper turned on its side and point it to the heavens. This would constitute the same area a radio telescope searches at a time. Then make sure you are receiving on any 10,000 plus frequencies and make sure you are using the right frequency at the right time in the right pocket of the sky to intercept an incoming signal.

That's how difficult it is searching a sky. Above that you have the constant annoyances of background radiation, quasars, novas and spatial anomalies to hinder your search.

Those are just some of the variables a radio astronomer has to contend with on a daily basis.

those conditions only apply to ground based tech Red*. If we had any sense we would gear in solar orbit sensitive enuff to pick those needles out of the haystacks. See 'imperial Earth' by A C Clarke.

ps wanna buy a conspiracy theory?

Well I was going to say that our method of radio telemetry really sucks and they should put more money into the project but...that's econimics for ya...anyway what you got for me?
